What is Sterling Silver & How Does it Compare to Other Metals?

2nd June 2025

asnSterling silver jewellery is a common choice when it comes to buying new pieces for one’s jewellery collection, and for good reason. But why choose it over pieces made from other metals? In this article, we’ll be explaining what sterling silver is, how it compares to other metals and, lastly, why you should choose it over other jewellery items made from different metals:

What is sterling silver?

Simply, sterling silver is an alloy which is made up of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, which are normally zinc and copper. You can identify their authenticity by looking for the 925 mark, which is normally stamped into the silver itself. However, it differs from jewellery that is silver-plated, which is simply a base metal with a thin coating of pure silver.

How does sterling silver compare to other metals?

Jewellery can be made from a wide range of different metals and materials, including nickel, gold, rose gold, stainless steel and even leather (take a look at our collection of leather jewellery for men and boys). But how does sterling silver compare to those other metals? Let’s take a closer look.

Sterling silver vs. gold

Choosing between sterling silver and gold jewellery can be a tough choice to make, especially as both jewellery items are stunning in appearance. However, if you’re still on the fence, there are some factors that you will need to take into consideration before committing to one or the other.

For instance, sterling silver is more affordable than gold; it’s also tougher than pure gold and offers elegance and versatility. Gold, on the other hand, is more expensive and symbolises class and luxury, but gold, especially pure gold, is rather soft, making it far less durable than sterling silver jewellery.

Sterling silver vs. stainless steel

This is a common alternative metal to silver, as both are similar in colour and are equally as durable. However, there are some key differences that will need to be taken into account before choosing stainless steel over sterling silver jewellery. Firstly, silver is a precious metal, whereas stainless steel is an alloy of base metals.

Secondly, silver has a brighter, warmer tone to it, whereas stainless steel has a colder, more grey appearance. In addition, stainless steel will begin to rust over time, even if it says that it is rust-resistant, whereas silver simply won’t rust. It can, however, tarnish, but it can be cleaned and maintained far more easily than stainless steel can. Finally, silver holds its value, being more costly than stainless steel.

Sterling silver vs. silver-plated

Naturally, silver-plated jewellery is less valuable than solid sterling silver jewellery. Silver is hypoallergenic, but it’s not always going to protect your sensitive skin if you choose jewellery that is silver-plated. Silver-plated jewellery is a base metal that has simply been covered with a thin layer of silver.

A plated finish is likely to tarnish far more quickly and irritate the skin as a result. However, silver jewellery is solid, therefore remaining tarnish-free for longer and being kind to jewellery wearers with sensitive skin. In addition, it will hold its value and is considered to be more expensive than silver-plated items.

Sterling silver vs. nickel

Silver-coloured jewellery is not actually made from silver. Instead, it’s known in the field as German silver or nickel silver. This type of metal contains no precious metal at all. It simply looks like silver because it is made from nickel. Nickel can be problematic for jewellery wearers who have sensitive skin, whereas silver is considered to be hypoallergenic.

In addition, silver is a precious metal, and nickel is not. Lastly, silver holds its value for many years. Nickel, however, is incredibly cheap and will, therefore, not retain any value at all. If you have sensitive skin, then it’s recommended that you avoid nickel jewellery. This is to prevent irritation, tenderness and itchiness when it comes in contact with the skin.

Why choose sterling silver?

You’ll now have an understanding of why silver is such a popular choice for many fashionistas and avid jewellery lovers. However, just in case you needed another excuse to add sterling silver jewellery to your collection, here’s why you should choose it over other metals:

Reasons to choose sterling silver jewellery

  • Affordability – sterling silver is an affordable option for those looking to enhance their outfit with some glitz and glamour
  • Versatility – silver jewellery can be worn for any occasion at any time of the day. Wear the same jewellery to the office and for dinner with your friends. It will still give your outfit that finishing touch that will make you the envy of your friendship circle
  • Durability – it can be worn time and time again without deteriorating, if it’s of exceptional quality, like the jewellery we have available at Little Star Jewellery. Withstanding everyday wear and tear, it’s no wonder it’s adorned by many, day-in-day-out
  • Quality – sterling silver jewellery from Little Star Jewellery is made to the highest possible quality and standard. With a wide range of designs to choose from, you can rest assured that any  jewellery piece you choose will last a lifetime
  • Hypoallergenic properties – silver is perfect for jewellery wearers whose skin is easily irritated by other metals. This makes it ideal for those with sensitive skin. It won’t cause itchiness, irritation or tenderness. If silver jewellery does cause that, it’s likely plated
  • Easy maintenance – sterling silver can tarnish over time, but regular polishing will prevent this. Maintenance is quick, cheap and simple, especially if there aren’t any stones or gems adorning your jewellery item

Little Star Jewellery has an impressive range of jewellery available for men, women, children and babies that is perfect for any occasion or event.
